La photo ci-dessous a été prise en début de l’année 2013. Remarquez des femmes, des hommes, des enfants en tenue d’écoles, on dirait même un homme qui porte encore son sac (de travail probablement) et tous ces bidons et autres récipients à eau. A cette période, l’eau « potable » de la SODECI (Société de Distribution d’Eau de la Côte d’Ivoire) était devenue extrêmement rare à Abengourou, comme chaque année. Les familles marchaient de longues heures pour trouver le minimum nécessaire pour les tâches ménagères et pour la cuisine. Quant à l’eau à boire, les entreprises de production d’eau se sont frotté les mains car les eaux puisées dans les puits et celles distribué par la citerne dans l’image ci-dessus laissaient toujours à désirer. Vivement que la “coopération dans le domaine de l’eau” porte de bon fruits.

What a shock! Google Reader and more Google Services are shutting down!

I thought I was in a dream when I opened my Google Reader account this morning. Instead of viewing the latest feeds from my favorite websites, a notification window was announcing Google Reader will shut down on July 1, 2013. According to the Google Reader Blog, usage of the online application “has declined”, and as a company (Google) they’re more interested in focusing their energy into “fewer products.”

I felt so sad that it will happen because I have been using the application since I started blogging in 2008. In fact I consider it a must have tool for every blogger and any person interested in watching websites without necessarily checking them.

The guys at Google surely reflected on the decision thoroughly because the consequences of Google Reader shutting down could be disastrous. Imagine you signed into the app and found it was no longer available. My God, what a shock! After realizing you may not even remember the exact url of a blog or a website to follow afresh, it is important to export all your Google reader data to use it elsewhere.

Exporting Google Reader data

Go to Google Takeout, a Data Liberation platform that makes leaving from Google products easy. In Google Takeout, you will choose to make an archive of your Google Reader data. It will be downloaded as an zip file that you can import in an alternative reader.

The Official Google Blog has also announced the end of other products including Apps Script, Google Building Maker, Google Cloud Connect and Google Voice App for Blackberry just to name a few. Read the complete list.

It has happened before

Google is not at its first experience of closing services and applications on grounds to focus on the “new kind of computing environment” we live in. With the recently announced closures, a total of 70 features or services would have been closed since 2011.

Where is the World AIDS Day Red Ribbon coming from?

I don’t remember the first time I pinned a Red Ribbon in line with World AIDS Day but since then, I have been used to it without finding out where it comes from. Why not another color? Why not another object instead of a ribbon? Well, for 2012 World AIDS Day, I decided to dig a little in the matter and here is my brief finding.

The story

The Red Ribbon is the result of a 1991 project organized by the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus, which is a New York-based organization. The mission of the Organization is to “utilize art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over.”

According to records, the artists who formed the “Visual AIDS Artists Caucus” wanted to create a symbol that can be seen to demonstrate compassion for people living with AIDS as well as their caregivers – individuals (paid or not) who regularly take care of a child or a sick, elderly, or disabled person.

These artists got inspired by the yellow ribbons honoring American soldiers serving in the Gulf war. The red color was chosen for its “connection to blood and the idea of passion — not only anger, but love, like a valentine.”

The project encourages to keep the Red Ribbon image copyright free, so that no individual or organization would profit from its use. It should also be used as a consciousness raising symbol, not as a commercial or trademark tool.

That’s it about the 21-year old Red Ribbon which is likely going to be around forever when you consider the direct and indirect consequences of HIV/AIDS on the individual, the family, the economy and the society at large.

I don’t know about a definition of Azonto other than the one found at Wikipedia which says:

Azonto is a dance originating from Ghana. The African dance form incorporates complex co-ordinates body movement and non-verbal communication in a rhythmic fashion in very few one-two timed steps. Just like most African dances, knee bending and hip movements are rudiments to dancing it. The dance has effectively evolved from a few rudimentary moves to embrace depictions of ironing,washing, driving, boxing, grooming, praying, swimming, and others.

There are lots of video tutorials if you ever want to learn how to dance Azonto. Have fun. :)

 

Harenbaltix

Harenbaltix serait mon prénom gaulois

Je me suis laissé allé dans un jeu sur Facebook et d’après cette application en ligne, mon prénom gaulois serait “Harenbaltix”.

Franchement amusant, surtout que j’aime la bande dessiné Asterix. Je ne sais pas sur quelle base l’application a trouvé l’équivalence entre “Ndzulo Joe” et “Harenbaltix” qui se trouve être un personnage qu’Obélix engage pour lui chasser du sanglier dans “Obélix et compagnie“, le vingt-troisième album de la série de bande dessinée Astérix. Cet album a été publié en 1976, je n’étais pas encore né. Il faut noter que dans ce même album, Obélix a eu sept employés différents pour lui chasser du sanglier.

Mapping United Methodist Church Locations

Since I discovered Google Map Maker, I have contributed to make some locations I’m familiar with to appear on Google Maps. It’s an amazing experience and I’m happy people could find some of those places online.

Mapping United Methodist Church Locations on Google Maps

After realizing that local churches of the United Methodist Church in Cote d’Ivoire could not be found online (as it’s the case with many churches in the USA), I have voluntarily embarked on the project to add to Google Maps every parish that I will come across on the Ivorian territory. You can view the map here.

How long will the mapping last for?

This is a project I run during my free time. I don’t have a specific date to terminate it. Since I’m a member of the United Methodist Church Missionary District of Abengourou (east of Cote d’Ivoire), I will focus on having the 28 local churches found in the District. However, I would love to have as many local churches nationwide mapped by the end of 2014.

You can contribute to the project.

Mapping churches nationwide can be intricate. So I welcome contributors to participate on the project so as to make it easy to find maps local United Methodist (UM) churches online. You can contribute by:

  • Dropping the GPS coordinates of a church you know as comment to this post (name of church + GPS information)
  • Dropping Google Maps links of localities where local UM churches are found.

With time, I will make available other ways to contribute to this project. Chech out the map here.

La clé v3000 de MTN disponible à Abengourou

Le Wi-Fi géant de MTN Côte d’Ivoire (WiMax) est maintenant accessible à Abengourou via la clé Internet v3000 du même opérateur et ce, après Abidjan, Assinie, Bassam, Yamoussoukro, San Pedro, Bouaké, Daloa et Gagnoa.

Plus de mobilité en haut débit

Les internautes de la capitale du royaume de l’Indénié peuvent maintenant s’offrir les services d’accès à Internet via la clé v3000 de MTN Côte d’Ivoire. En effet, Aviso (filiale Orange Côte d’Ivoire Télécom) est sans doute le principal FAI dans la ville et ses environs. Pour avoir accès à Internet à haut débit, les utilisateurs du web doivent faire l’usage d’une connexion via ADSL. Les adeptes de la connexion sans fil se contentent d’utiliser Internet via des points d’accès de routeurs Wi-Fi dont la portée est limitée à environs 50m. Depuis le 11 juillet 2012, une nouvelle réalité prévaut avec la disponibilité de la clé Internet v3000 offrant plus de mobilité aux usagers du web.

La clé v3000 renforce la concurrence

La concurrence des FAI ira t-elle plus loin à Abengourou? Est-ce que leurs services clientèle s’amélioreront ? J’aime les services d’Aviso mais je crains pour eux car cette entreprise faisait la pluie et le beau temps. Les clés Internet d’Orange n’ont pas toujours bien fonctionné dans cette partie du pays comparé à la clé Internet mobile de MTN – outil d’accès à internet mobile le plus populaire.

L’accès à Internet offert par Orange est plus intéressant sur les téléphones potables et smart phones. Mais Dieu c’est combien ces appareils (d’origine) coûte cher et donc pas vraiment à la portée de plusieurs personnes. De l’autre côté, le paramétrage des appareilles « chinetoque » n’offre pas toujours une accessibilité à internet de qualité et satisfaisante. Les usagers du web ont donc toujours recours à un PC pour bénéficier du web.

Le temps nous dira qui de ces opérateurs (y compris Aviso) maitrise l’offre de l’accès à Internet à Abengourou.

Faire la différence entre la clé v3000 et la clé 3G+

La clé v3000 en promotion

Pour son lancement à Abengourou, MTN organise une promotion sur la clé v3000. La clé v3000 est en promotion jusqu’au 17 juillet au prix de 19.000F au lieu de 29.000F. D’après une des hôtesses, “1 mois de connexion à Internet est inclus” à ce prix. La v3000 est disponible à l’agence MTN d’Abengourou. Attention! N’oubliez pas votre pièce d’identité en partant faire votre achat. Sans identification la clé ne sera pas opérationnelle.
