June 23 is the day set aside with the aim to highlight the plight of women all over the world who have lost their husbands. The first ever UN International Widows’ Day was adopted without a vote in December 2010, with effect from 2011.
An estimated 115 million of the world’s 245 million widows face poverty and discrimination, with many deprived of their inheritance, land and even their children.
June 23 is therefore an additional opportunity to have a special thought for my grand mom and all the widows in my family. I wish them the necessary health and wisdom to be agents of positive change in their families.
