The Ivorian Minister of Health and the Fight Against AIDS, Pr Thérèse N’dri-Yoman presided the official ceremony to comemorate World Blood Donation Day in Cote d’Ivoire and to inaugurate the Abengourou Regional Blood Transfusion Centre. It is the Minister of Health’s wish that the centre significantly contributes to increase the number of blood bags produced nationally. “To cover the need in blood, about 220 000 blood bags are required every year” said the Minister in her speech. “Whereas the National Blood Transfusion Center produces about 130 000 blood bags.” Hence much is to be done to achieve national blood sufficiency as the country’s backbone of blood supply is achieved “by volunteer blood donors mainly made up of youths and the jobless” the Minister highlighted.
