Microsoft, announced that it will rename SkyDrive, its online storage service to OneDrive.
The company believes that the new brand (OneDrive) delivers the best value and best symbolizes their “vision for the future”. A future characterised by having one place to store important stuff like documents, photos and videos, in an era were individuals have more and more devices.
Why SkyDrive to OneDrive?
The British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB) claimed Microsoft was infringing on its copyright. In July 2013, Microsoft lost a trademark suit and was forced to rename SkyDrive. Both companies settled after Microsoft requested “reasonable period of time to allow for an orderly transition to a new brand”.
If you currently have a SkyDrive account, you don’t need to take any action. The new service will be deployed and your files will remain in place.
